As I have found in all Hiaasen books, this one is amusing, witty, fast paced and in some places laugh out loud funny. Palmer Stout, a lobbyist of great renown and zero morals, attracts the attention of a demented enviro-warrior by his personal behavior. When enviro-warrior finds out personal slob Stout is about to defile a quiet and undeveloped Toad Island with a golf Course community, the fun begins. One kidnapped dog, one overly sympathetic wife/girlfriend, one evil developer, one hitman, one car salesman turned governor, and numerous other characters later, the story reaches it's typical Hiaason style resolution with all the pieces neatly tied up. Skink, the delightfully odd ex-governor in hiding makes a major appearance in this book as the action-oriented conscience who makes all things right.

It's a funny book. At over 500 pages I thought it was about a hundred Pages too long. Some of the plot lines drag out and a host of characters (there seemed more in this book than in others of his) each has their moment and background story in the midst of the major plot line. Although amusing, I started thinking "ok, this should be ending" about two thirds of the way through the book.

In December of 1968 we lost John D. MacDonald, I missed his characters and style. A business acquaintance suggested Hiaason, but unlike me, hadn't been a MacDonald fan, so she hadn't made the connection.... A few chapters into the book I'm feeling a familiar style... and a dog named Boodles? Reference to Bahia Mar? Then the request for "any book by John D. MacDonald..."

When MacDonald died there was the hope that maybe there was one more book to be published.... In some ways this is it, Hiaason captures the style, and adds a bit of comic relief. Is this a great book, no.... Is it a good read, yes! Be warned, however, if you are a Republican he has you nailed, this is all about Republican excesses, misogynism and corruption.
Do you need something to lighten your spirits? This book is your answer! It's wonderfully written, laugh out loud funny, and is a great social commentary on what and who is really crazy.
Not as sick as many of the other Hiaasen mysteries, but certainly worthwhile and entertaining. In fact, I'd almost call it "mellow' for him. As always, magnificent characterizations and delightful "scum getting it's just desserts". And this one has a delightfully wide selection of scum. The denouement is particularly artful. The dog is great. He is a full character with insights to his feelings and actions. The hit man is an especially focused and creepy character. There is even one tragic and one tear-jerker moment woven in. More Skink backstory too. While my favorite Hiaasen is still Lucky You, which had me laughing till my sides hurt, I really enjoyed this one. It does not disappoint in any way whatsoever.

(One final note, this one has a strong thread of what his newspaper articles must be like. You could imagine these events in the headlines. This is depressing if you think about it, but they are still squeezed completely (like a Florida Orange?) till you can see the dark humor in it.)
Hiaasen is one of my favorite authors and this is my favorite of his books. I buy copies of it all the time, to give as gifts, and I haven't found anyone who doesn't agree that this is a really fun, well-written romp. Hiaasen's characters are memorable, many for their crazy personalities and antics, and each book he writes has an environmental message. If you are new to Carl Hiaasen's work, I'd suggest starting with one of his earlier books, just so you will understand some of the characters that pop up in his stories. (Each is a story unto its own, not sequels or continuations of the others, though.) He's had some really bad duds over the years, but Sick Puppy isn't one of them.
Many members of our family are big fans of Carl Hiaasen and have read all of his books. I think "Sick Puppy", which I have read already and given to a friend so that I had to get another copy from , is one of his all time bests. His humor is, to me, light hearted even though some might call it dark. I couldn't find a character category between "one-dimensional" and "developed" to check off. The villains are rather one-dimensional, but that is because they are single-minded and often rather stupid as criminals tend to be, especially in books. The heroes are a bit more complex, tenacious, and rather sex-obsessed, but that is what the guys who read the books enjoy the most. I find it rather tiresome, but I love the humorous and gratuitous violence that results in the undoing of the villains.
One of Hiaasen's better efforts. I'd read most of his work and then stopped several years ago. Don't know why, just was tired of his work. Well after a bit of time away Sick Puppy really rewarded me. Totally crazy romp through Florida with Skink. Well worth it. Put it on your and hie off to the beach.
This book was recommended by a friend a few years ago. I was told it U like Kurt Vonegut, then I would like Carl Hiaasen. While I understand why they would think so I would probably file it in different folder. Having said that I really liked this book. As whacked out as the collection of characters are they are none the less disgustingly, humorously, unbelievably real. A crazy cacophony of personalities and branching stories so masterly woven in to one that makes sense and has some very satisfying outcomes in the most unexpected ways. My only dissatisfaction was learning that it was a series book and there are volumes that come before. Stand alone, the protagonist and his supporting cast are well developed but one of the most interesting characters was missing some information and now I know why. I see book 1 in my not so distant future.
