It’s been a while since I read a paranormal romance by a new-to-me author that I enjoyed this much. N.D. Jones wrote a fantastic story that sweeps you up and bowls you along. Her characters have depth, they’re relatable. You root for them, cheer their triumphs and wince when they show you just how ‘human’ they can be. She also shows you just how enduring and entertaining classic concepts can be in the right hands.

My only ‘criticism’ of this story was that she’d written a clear resolution, the conflict had been resolved…but the story kept going on, down a different path that later proves valuable to the series, but not that particular book. It felt unconnected from what had come before. I wondered if it had been meant to be a short story between Book 1 and Book 2, and so that’s how I viewed it. Bonus story! So, not really a criticism at all, in that light.

I sat down to read this entire series because, for the first time in a while, my interest was caught by a paranormal romance’s book description. I’m so glad I did. I devoured this series, barely coming up for air, doing little else until I’d read them all. This trilogy is going on my To-Be-Read-Again pile, and I’ll be watching for other books by N.D. Jones.

Honestly I wasn't sure how I would feel about this book. However, I really enjoyed it! The story is very different than most of the "supernatural" type books currently out. The characters are different than most and very developed. The author takes the time to really let you get to know the characters at the beginning, but still makes it interesting during that time. The story itself draws you in. It was hard to put down!
The one thing I didn't enjoy as much is all of the sexual parts of the book. However, that is just a personal pet peeve and even those parts were written very nicely.
Overall, this is a great book, I definitely recommend it! Especially for people who love supernatural type books and are looking for one different than the rest.

OF FEAR AND FAITH by N.D. Jones starts off with a bang and had me from the word go. It’s a chilling thriller that had me holding my breath as FBI Special Agent Assefa Berber and psychology professor Sanura Williams try to track down a merciless killer—and stay alive doing so. Since I’m a big fan of thrillers, I loved the deftly-handled touches of horror. There was real suspense and tension during those passages and I would have liked more. The interweaving of African mythology made the story all the more intriguing.

I found OF FEAR AND FAITH to be an exceedingly well-written paranormal romance. I thought the characters spot on and the story line compelling. It’s a great read that’s very easy to get lost in.

Ms. Jones has created some very appealing characters that become more so when set against this backdrop of magic and mysticism. If you love suspense, danger, and mystery that’s doused by ample portions of romance, than this book is for you.
Wow...this book was an awesome read! Besides being well-written with amazing characters, the plot was multi-layered, with unusual paranormal creatures abound, in a very realistic setting.
Those who know me know that I required realism and common sense in my reads, no matter how outlandish or crazy the plots may be.
The sex in this book was sizzling without being crass; it also didn't overtake the plot. YAH!
I loved the H/h, who came across as thoughtful and intelligent. Heroes and heroines need these qualities, in order to be heroes and heroines, in my opinion. (I hate dumb females who constantly make one mistake after another, cry all of the time, and always have the need to be saved by the hero...ugh).
Anyway...I wonder what took me so long to read this...lol. I'll be reading the next installment - 'Of Beast and Bonds' soon!

I have just finished OF FEAR AND FAITH (at 330 in the morning) and I am so impressed with this book that I had to come straight to my computer to write my review, despite the early hour.

OF FEAR AND FAITH is the first book in the DEATH AND DESTINY trilogy by author N.D. Jones. Its main characters—psychology professor, Sanura Williams (a Fire Spirit Witch) and Special FBI agent, Assefa Berber (her were-cat familiar)—must come together to face their individual fears to take on preternatural demons and full-human scumbags in order to become who they are destined to be, the Fire Witch and Cat of Legend.

This is a great story. It’s just that simple.

The author’s profile page states she has, “a desire to see more novels with positive, sexy, and three-dimensional African American characters as soul mates, friends, and lovers”. Well, she certainly accomplishes that goal with this book.

Both Sanura and Assefa are well rounded individuals with likes, dislikes, goals and dreams, fears and concerns and despite their hero statuses, weaknesses. They make mistakes. They’re human—sort of. They’re great together. I was enamored with their romance, their personality traits and their story. THEY, the characters, gave the story weight and dimension.

I also enjoyed getting to know Sanura’s mother, Makena (also a witch) and her god-father Mike (a magical dwarf) as well as all the other characters.

OF FEAR AND FAITH is a paranormal romance with strong African-American characters. I love that! What I love more is that the African-American side of these characters IS celebrated and yet, it is NOT the end-all/be-all of who they are. It’s not all about the color of their skin and their culture (not entirely); they are just people. Sure, they’re people who can create magic and turn into 600 pound cats; and yes, they’re demon hunters and warriors…but, they’re just people. That’s what makes this a great book. It’s about WHO they are and what they can do together despite their fears and because of their faith in their beliefs and in each other.

Although readers should be aware of the type of book it is when they buy it, I do feel the need to warn the inattentive that there is a great deal of sexual content. However, it does not overrun the story. Sometimes, in the romance genre, authors tend to move the sex scenes along with tidbits of actual story. That’s not the case in this book. The romance (and what comes with it) is important to the story but doesn’t overwhelm it. I personally like that… a lot.

This is a wonderfully entertaining story with fun and interesting characters. I enjoyed every minute of it and cannot wait to read the second installment OF BEAST AND BONDS in this trilogy. If YOU are looking for a good book to read…this is it. I would highly recommend it for lovers of paranormal stories, romances, African-American characters and/or fantasy.
