My favorite genre is urban fantasy. There are many cookie cutter books out there where the plot is predictable. This is not one of those books. I absolutely loved the first two books in this series and cannot wait for the third to come out. The world building was fabulous. I felt like I could see and feel what the main character, Calamity, was seeing for the first time as she discovered the vastness of the lands she had not explored. Things I absolutely loved about this book were that it was completely unpredictable. I would have never guessed what was coming next and the plot just keeps on expanding. It's one of those books where you say to yourself how does the author pre-think out all these little details and in-between steps before getting to a specific place she want to take us to. Calamity is a character with character! What I mean by that is she is so fun to read because she makes mistakes and just picks herself up and keeps on trudging along. She is funny and has quirky thoughts and has a unique way of dealing with constant change. I love characters that are flawed and have much to learn but seem to have some innate desire to try to do what is right only they aren't quite sure what right actually is. The supporting cast is excellent. I love and hate the male lead. He's perfect for his role but that doesn't mean he's a good guy. So much to learn and I don't want to give anything away because I don't want to ruin any of the surprises. Let me just leave you with this. Tons of action. A great adventure. Sexual tension and fantastic interplay between the male and female lead characters. The pace was perfection. Not a single wasted scene in the story. Just building connections and foreshadowing the potential future of where the story might go. Lot's of grit. Many twists and turns. Very unique storyline. I can't say enough positive things about this series. I read the second book thinking there is no way it can top the first but it does. Oh boy does it. You will not believe what happens in book 2. All I have to say to Danielle Lori is thank you so much for taking the time and effort to put this story to print for others to enjoy and write faster. I'm dying to find out what happens in book 3!Tags : A Girl Named Calamity (Alyria Book 1) - Kindle edition by Danielle Lori. A Girl Named Calamity Alyria Book 1 edition by Danielle Lori Romance eBooks Reviews
Calamity is down on her luck and has to travel across dangerous lands to save herself and the magic that she unknowingly possesses. With the help of an unlucky, dangerously good looking assassin, can she make it safely to her destination and save herself as well as everyone else she encounters? Calamity is young, naive, and sheltered with no knowledge of the outside world. Follow her and her escort on their journey to save everyone from unknown dangers.
I absolutely loved this book. Once I started reading it, I couldn't stop. Such a wonderful book, and I cannot wait for the next one to come out so I can read it too. Worth every second as well as the hours extra pining for more.
Wow! I don’t even know how to write a review for this! It cannot be summarized nor can it be wrapped up in a few paragraphs. I will say that this is one heck of a ride! From the very first page to the last Ms. Lori takes you on a cross country trip the likes you have never known.
Calamity doesn’t know what her future holds. She’s just kind of letting it push her along without any fight or struggle, although deep inside she knows the life before her is not the one she would choose. Then there’s all kind of drama at Grandma’s house that causes Calamity to set off on a cross country trip when she’s never even left her own small town. She is young, innocent and completely clueless because suddenly the world she lives in explodes with more danger and mayhem than she could have ever imagined.
This has some incredible main characters as well as some of the wittiest and smartest dialogue I’ve read in quite a while. The dynamics between Calamity and her tour guide, Weston, is crazy diverse and man, you just never know what they’re going to do or say. I loved it!
Forewarning though, this ends in one doozie of a cliffhanger. The good news, the second book A Girl in Black and White, is just around the corner.
Heroine POV
Contains Violence
It was really difficult to finish it. It was a painfully boring a story told from the female POV.
So not only you don't get to know of the male's POV, but you just read a mostly monologue dragging and dragging without anything interesting actually happening.
It was a chaos. Sometimes it was difficult to know if she was thinking or imagining or dreaming or was it actually happening.
I enjoyed one of the books by this author and was looking forward to reading another book and boy was I not surprised and not in a good way.
I would not recommend it.
Do Not Pass This One Up - No Spoilers -This is one of those books that just drags you in and holds you under!
Calamity has truly lived her life sheltered from most of its harsher realities - this leaves her a bit naive - okay a lot naive - When she is suddenly thrust into the world she literally has very little chance of surviving on her own - she is also a little impulsive, and quite opinionated which seems to get her into a lot of trouble
Then there is Weston - Mysterious - Quiet - Dangerous -full of secrets - the oh so yummy good guy or is he the bad guy? The Jury is still out on him.
The undertones and chemistry between him and Calamity is off the charts -
There is so much going on I honestly do not know whom to trust or which direction to go
I do not want to write any spoilers - I can say that it was easy for me to get sweep away in this story and I loved every minute of it.
Danielle Lori built an amazing world - we definitely do not lack for knowledge as each new tribe or town is introduced - some of them are pretty fantastical -
This is a must read for anyone who enjoys the fantasy genre -
My only pet peeve is this does end on a serious cliff hanger -
If that is not your thing then you're in luck - book 2 is out ;)
I originally received a free copy from the author but ended up purchasing the book - yeah it is a must own
